Sweeping new boating safety legislation is poised to become law.

State Sen. Charles Fuchillo has co-sponsored a boating bill which would require operators of motorized crafts who are 18 and under to pass a mandatory safety training course or face fines. It does not require operator licensing.

Officials say the bill's focus is to get as many people safety certified as possible.

The bill is awaiting Gov. Andrew Cuomo's signature.

If passed, New York would become the 21st state to make boating safety courses mandatory.
