A blind Farmingdale High School teacher says a Braille computer was stolen from his wife's car.
Jim Hughes says the specialized computer was stolen Tuesday when it was parked outside his Farmingdale home.
“I was angry. I felt violated. And I also felt that pit in [my] stomach, like, ‘Oh no, what am I going to do with work,’” he says.
The computer cost the school district around $3,000.
Hughes says he would not press charges against the person who took it, and that he just wants the device back in the classroom so he can continue doing what he does best.
“If you have it, just leave it somewhere and make sure I get it back. Because there's no value to you or anyone else,” he says.
When students found out what happened to Mr. Hughes, they got together and made a Braille card for him, and gave him gift cards to two of his favorite restaurants.
No arrests have been made in the case. If the computer is not returned, the school district has said it would buy Hughes a new computer
