Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman is expected to attend a church service in Hempstead today and address the fatal shooting at a Buffalo supermarket.
Police say 10 people were killed and three others wounded when a white teenage gunman in military gear opened fire with a rifle.
Authorities say 11 of the victims are Black. The shooting is being investigated as a racially motivated hate crime.
Blakeman will join the Nassau police commissioner at Antioch Baptist Church. They are expected to address safety concerns following the mass shooting.
Police said the shooter, 18-year-old Payton Gendron of Conklin, arrived at the store Saturday afternoon in full military style body armor and helmet, carrying a high powered rifle and a camera for live streaming the shooting. Gendron was arrested and is being charged with first-degree murder.
The shooting in Buffalo is the latest in a string of high profile shootings in New York state. Last month, 10 people aboard a subway in Brooklyn were shot and 20 others injured.
In April 2021, a gunman killed one and injured several others at a West Hempstead Stop & Shop.
Long Island police say they're stepping up patrols at some businesses and large gathering places in the wake of the Buffalo shooting.
