The bitter cold conditions gripping Long Island are expected to last the next few days, forecasters say.
They say temperatures overnight will dip between 10 and 15 degrees with wind chills from 0 to 10 below. Snow flurries are also possible.
Suffolk officials came together Thursday to warn residents that the cold weather can be dangerous to at-risk residents.
"If you know anyone or you see anyone that may require housing assistance, we have temporary housing assistance available," says Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone.
Officials are also reminding residents to occasionally run their water to keep pipes from freezing, keep portable heaters on a flat surface and away from flammable objects, and to check on older neighbors and pets.
A total of 15 warming centers will be open in the Town of Hempstead through Friday. There will also be nine centers open throughout Nassau County.
Nassau County is also opening its winter homeless hotline. The number is 1-866-WARM BED.
