Long Island native Billy Joel received Kennedy Center Honors Sunday in Washington, D.C. for influencing American culture.

It's the nation's highest award for performers. The "Piano Man" said that receiving such an honor was a little overwhelming.

Opera singer Martina Arroyo, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana and actress Shirley MacLaine also received honors at the event.

News 12's Elisa DiStefano battled wintry weather to attend the event and says all the excitement made it a night to remember.
