A Nassau legislator is proposing some changes to the county’s calendar.
Legislator Josh Lafazan filed a bill to add Eid Al Adha, Diwali and Lunar New York to the list of official holidays.
If passed, the bill would allow county employees time off for the Asian, Islamic and Hindu celebrations.
“The makeup of our community continues to evolve,” Lafazan says. “Because of this changing mosaic here in Nassau County, it is now more important than ever that we add these holidays and make them official.
The Syosset school district was the first on Long Island to recognize Lunar New Year and Diwali on their academic calendar in 2016.
