The kickoff of Long Island's largest food drive event got underway today.
The Bethpage Turkey Drive for Island Harvest is celebrating its sixth year and working hard to help the 316,000 families in need this year.
Officials say the number of families in need is at an unprecedented high and about 570 food pantries and community agencies on Long Island will receive donations from the event.
Long Islanders are being asked to donate frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items, supermarket vouchers or cash.
Approximately 70,000 individuals seek food assistance weekly on Long Island through soup kitchens, food pantries and other feeding programs.
