A volunteer firefighter in Bethpage allegedly set fires around the community he was supposed to protect, according to police, including at least one that involved a Molotov cocktail.
Christopher Cordeiro, 20, was arraigned Monday morning on charges of arson and criminal possession of a weapon.
Investigators say he's responsible for at least five fires dating back to June 2017, when he allegedly hurled the Molotov cocktail into a sump on Arthur Avenue.
They also blamed Cordeiro for starting a dumpster fire in March on West Millpage Drive. And he is accused of three this month: a fire in an abandoned house fire on Stewart Avenue, a fire in a wooded area on Broadway and a shed fire on North Hermann Avenue.
Neighbors say there are children living in the area and that there were propane tanks in the shed. There's a gas line about 125 feet way too, they say.
A judge set Cordeiro's bail at $38,000 cash or $77,000 bond. He's due back in court on Aug. 22.
As police walked him out of jail Monday, he was wearing a Bethpage Fire Department T-shirt.
Members of the department declined to speak to News 12 on camera.
