Bellone wins re-election as Suffolk executive
Democratic incumbent Steve Bellone won his bid for re-election as Suffolk County executive Tuesday.
Republican challenger James O'Connor conceded just after 10:40 p.m. after trailing in the polls with almost all precincts reporting.
Last month's Newsday/News12/Siena College poll showed the incumbent Bellone with a 33 percent lead over Republican challenger James O'Connor.
The actual race was a bit closer, with Bellone leading O'Connor by 14 percent at the time of his concession.
Bellone was running for his second term, and had touted his record as a cost-cutter during the campaign.
"We came in and inherited the worst fiscal crisis in the county's history, cut the deficit, cut the budget gap and delivered three straight balanced budgets under the tax cap," Bellone said on the campaign trail.
O'Connor, a Great River attorney and former member of the North Hempstead Town Board, had called for even more spending cuts.
During his concession speech, he called on fellow GOP members to continue working toward the party's goals in the county.
