Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone says the county suffered 52 additional COVID-19 deaths over the past 24 hours, alarming numbers when compared to many other areas that appear to be flattening the curve.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says when looking at hospitalization rates and ICU admissions, it seems the state and many counties are stabilizing. But today's information was not good for Suffolk.
"We have a couple of hotspots in Suffolk County that we are watching," says Cuomo. "But overall we've been very aggressive in our suburban counties."
Bellone says those hotspots are in Brentwood, Riverhead and Huntington Station, all of which now have emergency testing sites open. Brentwood has the highest number of confirmed cases in Suffolk with more than 1,500.
Bellone says he is looking at county data to see if more sites are needed.
"We've been able to do that this week -- stand up three individual sites and we are looking at other sites and we expect over the next couple of days to announce additional locations that we may be expanding to," says Bellone.
Bellone says the key is to reach communities with large immigrant populations that might not be getting the message about the pandemic and the testing available. He says they are trying to help through a texting program and community outreach.
