Suffolk County warned of catastrophic budget cuts to police and public safety service if the county does not get federal coronavirus aid soon.
Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone said Friday he will be making $20 million in budget cuts to the county's police department, completely eliminating the 200 incoming officers that would have been in the police academy.
"I have been talking for months now since we have gone through this pandemic about the need for disaster assistance for state and local government," says Bellone.
The 2021 Suffolk budget currently has a $400 million deficit, that Bellone says is due to the pandemic's impact. He says the only way to fill the gap is with money coming from federal aid.
Held up at the federal level is a disaster aid package. Bellone is calling on President Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to join the Long Island Congressional delegation -- both Democrats and Republicans -- in supporting the relief bill.
In the meantime, Suffolk Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart says officers will be put at greater risk with these cuts.
"The cuts the county executive outlined today can have a devastating and dangerous impact on the work we have done," says Hart.
Bellone says he does not support the "Defund the Police" movement, however he says the federal government has given him no choice but to make these cuts.
In Nassau, Executive Laura Curran says while the budget has taken a major hit due to the pandemic, she has already submitted a $3.3 billion budget for 2021 without police cuts.
Bellone will be submitting the 2021 budget in two weeks.
