A Bellmore man was sentenced on Monday for a crash that caused a man to lose a leg and left him in a medically induced coma.
A Nassau County judge sentenced Robert O'Brien Jr. to four to 12 years behind bars after he pled guilty to DWI and aggravated vehicular assault, among other charges.
The incident occurred in July 2021 when O'Brien drove drunk and crashed into 73-year-old Steven Strauss in Long Beach.
Strauss was pinned between two vehicles as a result of the crash and was in a medicinally induced coma for weeks. He spent six months in the hospital and his leg was amputated as a result of his injuries.
O'Brien fled the scene after the crash.
Prosecutors revealed in court that O'Brien had a prior DWI charge in 2014, but his attorney said he was on a better path after that incident.
Strauss told News 12 he hopes O'Brien learns from his mistakes.
