The Mastic baby who cops say was severely beaten by her father was released from Stony Brook University Medical Center Friday, though doctors said the true extent of the damage is yet unknown.
Evelyn, who turned 3 months old this week, was knocked off a bed and repeatedly kicked in the chest by her 20-year-old father, Joshua Cohen, police said. She was brought to Stony Brook University Medical Center with a fractured skull and rib, bleeding on the brain and long-lasting seizures, police said.
Alicia Biondo, 16, couldn't hold back the tears when discussing her daughter's stay in the intensive care unit.
"I'm very excited to bring my daughter home," she said.
Dr. Daniel Sloniewsky said Evelyn sustained neurological damage, but he isn't sure to what extent.
"She's breathing on her own and she's eating, so we hope for the best," Sloniewsky said. "But at this point it's still very early to tell."
Cohen was charged with first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
