Bayport-Blue Point won the Suffolk County volleyball championship last school year. That game on Nov. 11 was one of the last times Sage Renneisen would wear her No. 20 jersey.
Renneisen says her birthday is Nov. 20, making it her lucky number.
She was the only Phantoms athlete to wear No. 20 before the pandemic, and she'll be the last one to ever wear it.
The school retired No. 20 to honor the Class of 2020 for its perseverance in the pandemic.
"It takes a special person to keep hope alive and these students did just that," said Athletic Director Tim Mullins.
Instead of No. 20 jerseys to hand out, Mullins had banners printed out - one for the gym and one for the fields and both for seniors who endured so much.
So far, the school is the only one in the state to retire the No. 20 to honor the Class of 2020
