A Bay Shore man is facing a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge following an investigation by the Suffolk County SPCA.

Authorities say Dashawn Moore, 33, allegedly tethered a one-year-old pit bull mix named Knox with a chain shorter than the 15-foot minimum required under county code. Officials also said Moore struck the dog with a stick “for no justifiable reason,” causing the animal to yelp in pain.

The incident reportedly occurred in March.

Moore was issued a field appearance ticket on June 17 and is scheduled to be arraigned on July 7.
