Prosecutors say a 28-year-old Bay Shore man is facing kidnapping and other charges for abducting an 11-year-old girl from Queens after meeting her through an online messaging app.
They say Nicholas Wieber met the child on the Discord app, where their conversations allegedly became sexual in nature. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office says Wieber picked the girl up from her school in Queens on Dec. 12 and brought her to his home in Bay Shore.
According to the indictment, the girl’s mother became concerned when her daughter did not get off the school bus that afternoon. After contacting friends, the mother learned her daughter had allegedly been picked up by an older man and immediately notified police.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office says the New York Police Department began searching for the child and later tracked her to Wieber’s home.
It says police found her unclothed in his bed. Police say the girl was found inside the residence and was reunited with her family.
District Attorney Ray Tierney called the case a reminder for parents to closely monitor their children’s online activity.
“It’s a caution to us all that we have to really monitor what our children are doing on the internet because unfortunately, there are predators out there who are looking to victimize our children,” Tierney said.
Wieber is charged with multiple crimes, including first-degree kidnapping. Prosecutors say additional charges are expected.
Wieber’s attorney declined to comment.
Prosecutors say Wieber has been released on bail, with his family putting up their home as collateral.
