A Bay Shore man is accused of starting a blaze that injured three firefighters Saturday night. Arson detectives say 46-year-old Angel Pena confessed to starting the fire. Pena told officials that he was lying in bed when he lit a cigar. He says he threw the match over his shoulder, fell asleep and then woke up to find the bed on fire. Pena escaped from the burning home on Pineoaks Lane, where he rented an apartment. Members of the Brentwood Fire Department ran into the home searching for victims. Part of the first floor collapsed trapping one of the firefighters. Officials say the injured men are recovering. The fire chief hopes the arrest sends a message that arson is unacceptable. If convicted, Pena could face one to three years in prison.
