Members of the Bay Park community who were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy gathered today to mark the completion of a new measure to ward off more storm damage.

A ribbon-cutting was held for the community's new bulkhead, which aims to protect shorefront homes. The new bulkhead replaces an old one that had many holes and would draw out sand, creating hollows under the roadway behind it.

The project actually began before Sandy hit, and Town of Hempstead officials say that it proved a valuable defense during the devastating storm.

The town also completed a street-scaping project, which includes new brick pavers and lighting fixtures. Residents say it's a charming and welcome addition to their neighborhood.

Town officials say the entire project cost nearly $5 million.
