Poll results show Councilwoman Pamela Greene has defeated Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga for the Republican nomination for Islip town supervisor. Although 100 percent of precincts have reported, both sides agree a recount needs to take place since only 100 votes separate the two candidates. Barraga, who is also a former state Assemblyman, says he will not concede the election until all absentee ballots have been counted. Greene says she is happy to be ahead in the race, but will wait for the recount over the next few days. The seat was left vacant by former Supervisor Pete McGowan who resigned in March after pleading guilty to political corruption charges.
