A Town of Babylon employee may be fired over insensitive remarks he allegedly made about the Lindenhurst High School salutatorian for tonight's graduation.
Lindenhurst Union Free School District posted a video on their Facebook page featuring Yasmin Zohny, a Muslim student and the senior class salutatorian.
The video was then shared to another Facebook group, where Town of Babylon employee Andrew Vita allegedly wrote a profane comment, referring to the student’s head covering as a “trash bag.”
Officials say Vita has worked for the town's Department of Public Works for more than 30 years.
Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer says Vita has been suspended without pay. He also says the town is gathering evidence to explore further charges and is "seeking termination of the employee."
Schaffer also said he is prepared to offer Zohny an internship with the town.
