An autopsy performed on the Wal-Mart worker who died on the job on Black Friday confirms the man died of asphyxiation related to his trampling, but many questions about the case remain.
Finger-pointing has continued in the days since the fatal incident. Nassau Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey took the occasion Monday to defend the actions of his officers and personnel. He told reporters his department was proactive in the weeks prior to Black Friday, meeting with mall and Wal-Mart security personnel two weeks ago to go over security plans.
?The message was clearly portrayed that this was their responsibility and they need to plan it and police it properly,? Mulvey says of the meetings.
Six extra officers and a supervisor were on hand at the mall, and on an earlier occasion that morning, responded to and handled a disturbance on the line at the store.
Many shoppers told News 12 Long Island they think Wal-Mart is to blame for the stampede and subsequent death of Jdimytai Damour. Some say Nassau police deserve some of the blame as well.
Attorney Ken Mollins is suing Wal-Mart and the police department on behalf of a father and son from Hempstead who claim they were injured in the stampede. ?Everyone on line would tell you that this required police intervention that did not occur,? Mollins says.
Nassau Legislator Joe Scannell has proposed legislation to require stores to beef up security during blockbuster sales events.
A Wal-Mart spokesman tells News 12 Long Island the company is ready to work with Nassau lawmakers to consider proposals that will help avert a similar tragedy.
