New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli revealed a sticky situation in an audit of Roosevelt Union Free School District released Tuesday. The audit states the district, which is under state control, was more than $6 million in the red at the end of 2006. Furthermore, if spending isn't reined in significantly, the audit concludes that number will rise to $12 million by the end of this year. DiNapoli and Business Director Standley Bronski said sloppy bookkeeping led the district awry.
"[The record keeping] was done on scraps of paper and it was extremely difficult to audit," Bronski said.
Meanwhile, Roosevelt residents, like Frank Scott of the Roosevelt Watch Society, are furious.
"I cannot believe that a district that is controlled by the state of New York can run a $12 million deficit," Scott said.
