A teacher in the Center Moriches School District says she was suddenly reassigned because she tried to help a student.
Art teacher Janice Graf, who has been in the district for 30 years, was removed from her classroom after leaving campus with a student during school hours, according to Graf's lawyer.
Student Maddy Ziminski was suffering from what her mother called an emotional breakdown after two of her close friends had died within the span of a week.
"She took her to 7-Eleven to have a cup of hot cocoa and she took her back to school and got her back to class," says Ziminski's mother, Joann.
Center Moriches School Board President Joshua Foster declined to comment on the specifics of the case during a school board meeting Wednesday night, citing privacy laws.
Graf was reassigned to administrative work and has been barred from the school while the district's investigation continues.
