The at-home flu vaccine is now available to residents in 32 states, including in Connecticut and New Jersey.
FluMist at Home is a nasal spray version of the vaccine by AstraZeneca that can be ordered online and delivered to a person's home for them to administer themselves. It's not currently available in New York or 15 other states due to pharmacy rules.
The vaccine is approved for ages two to 49 and parents can administer the spray to their children.
"All they do is take it out of its packaging, put it into one nostril, spray the device, remove a clip from the middle, and then spray it into the other nostril," says Elizabeth Bodin of AstraZeneca.
People can also visit their doctor for the vaccine as well.
Bodin says the nasal vaccine is covered by most insurance companies and there is a shipping and handling of $8.99.
The spray must be refrigerated and is shipped with cold packs.
"When you receive your dose, there's a temperature tag that gets scanned to ensure that it's stayed in the right temperature throughout the entire shipping process and that it's safe and ready to use," says Bodin.
Health officials hope this at-home option will increase vaccination rates which have been declining.
Doctors from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention want people not to underestimate how sick you can become from the flu, especially if you have a weak immune system, or underlying heart or respiratory issues. They say more than 1 million people were hospitalized with the flu between October 2024 to May 2025.
