Assault charge against Smithtown councilman dismissed

An assault charge against a Suffolk County lawmaker was dismissed Wednesday morning.
As News 12 has reported, Smithtown Councilman Thomas Lohmann, 68, was accused of striking a fellow town board member earlier this year.
The alleged incident happened between Lohmann and Councilman Thomas McCarthy during a closed-door town board meeting in April.
Court records now show Lohmann is no longer facing the third-degree criminal assault charge stemming from the altercation.
Councilman Lohmann denied the allegations from the beginning, according to his attorney, Philip Branigan.
“I am energized and entirely dedicated to delivering strong, uninterrupted and results-driven representation for the people of Smithtown,” Lohmann said following the dismissal.
“In the best interest of the Town of Smithtown I have agreed to a dismissal in the case,” Councilman McCarthy said in a statement.
“As elected officials, we are entrusted by our residents to work together for the good of our community, even when disagreements arise. I hope this resolution allows us to put this chapter behind us and refocus our attention on the responsibilities that matter most to the people we represent,” McCarthy added.
