Before he was sentenced Wednesday, Efrain Guzman – the man who admitted to killing a popular grocery store clerk with an NYPD officer’s gun – made an emotional apology to the victim’s family.
“I'm sorry. Forgive me. I’m ashamed of myself,” he said in court.
Guzman received 20 years to life for shooting and killing Wali Camara in the victim's Bronx store back in August 2016 after Camara and two police officers tried to throw him out.
During the altercation, Guzman ripped an officer's gun from his holster and fired several shots, killing Camara.
Guzman said in his apology that he was on PCP and was “ashamed of admitting that.”
The victim’s relatives told News 12 after the court proceedings that it was too late for apologies.
The family has moved forward with civil action, launching a $20 million lawsuit against the NYPD and the city of New York. The family's lawyer pointed to a lack of proper police training and unsafe gun holsters for the filing of the wrong death lawsuit.
A family member told the judge that the NYPD has not shown any support to the family since the 2016 shooting. The incident led to the NYPD changing its gun holsters.
