Police have arrested a 22-year-old man for the stabbing death of a Washington, D.C. woman who was visiting a friend on Long Island.
Suffolk County police say Robert Schiavo, of Medford, was charged with murder in the death of 61-year-old Nancy McKinley. According to police, Schiavo broke into the Leisurely Lane home and stole money and checks. During the burglary, authorities say he noticed a bedroom light turn off. Schiavo grabbed a knife from the kitchen, entered the bedroom, woke up McKinley and stabbed her more than a dozen times.
Police say McKinley was found early Sunday at the home suffering from the stab wounds. She was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, where she died.
Schiavo is being held without bail. Police say they were able to make a quick arrest because they had information about a similar burglary that occurred in December. If convicted, Schiavo faces 25 years to life in prison. He is due back in court March 13.
