A third Angela's House has opened on Long Island to provide lodging and comfort to sick children who need 24-hour specialized medical care.
Bob Policastro founded Angela's House following the death of his 1-year-old daughter from medical complications. It took eight years to open the new Stony Brook location, which is dedicated to children who depend on ventilators.
The house has eight beds, and each room has specialized oxygen systems and a lift. Angela's House also utilizes touches like family photos and colorful murals and bedding to make the rooms feel more like a home and less like a hospital.
Karen Serva, of Sound Beach, calls the new location life-changing. One of her daughters used to be more than two hours away at a Westchester hospital, but now is only 15 minutes from home.
"It was the best news we could imagine," she says.
There are already Angela's House locations in East Moriches and Smithtown.
