The Amityville Union Free School District hosted a community forum Wednesday at Park Avenue Elementary School regarding its nickname.
School board members heard from residents and alumni regarding the future of the school's "warriors" name for sports teams.
While some said it is an opportunity to rebrand, others were against changing the name.
"That's the name of the game when you're right there on the field, is to win," one person said. "What's better than the word 'warrior.'"
Amityville is one of 12 schools on Long Island associated with Native American branding.
The district has until June 30 to announce its intentions.
Districts that opt not to make the switch risk losing state funding.
