A black woman allegedly fell victim to racism when she received her keys back from Cortave's Auto Repair in Aquebogue.
Marlene Parrish paid $125 to replace the alternator belt on her car, but received a shock when she looked at her key chain after arriving home. In addition to the car's model, she claims the "n-word" was written on a small paper key ring. Parrish says no customer should be subjected to such bias and she wants her money back. She also wants the employee or owner responsible for the offense charged.
Owner Tulio Cortave denies having written the word. He says he would like to apologize to Parrish in person and return her money. Riverhead police have not yet charged anyone, though their investigation is ongoing.
