The Patchogue-Medford School Board laid out the steps the district has taken since the stabbing death of Marcelo Lucero, allegedly at the hands of seven students, last week.
A moment of silence was observed at the Monday night meeting to remember Lucero.
Patchogue-Medford High School Principal Manuel Sanzone says it's time to come together as others are watching. He also took the time to tell the community the school has brought in crisis counselors as well as extra police and security guards on campus. The school has been working with local civic groups to teach kids about tolerance as well.
?In a moment?s time, we went from a place we all call home to a household name every home across our state, nation and world now knows and recognizes for hate,? Sanzone said.
Students and teachers also expressed regret the alleged hate crime has tainted the community.
?There are seven individuals that made a very bad decision, but there are thousands that make the right decision every day and we need to glorify them,? Patchogue teacher and resident Joan Durso said.
Outside the meeting, students sold T-shirts to help raise money for Lucero?s family. A community vigil for Lucero was also held Monday night. Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy will give a special address on tolerance and racial understanding Tuesday at 7 p.m.
