An alleged gang member from Bellport has been sentenced to 27 years in prison in the killing of five people while fleeing police in a stolen Camaro on Valentine's Day in 2018.

Prosecutors say Jamel Turner, 24, is a member of the Bloods gang who was high on marijuana and driving more than 150 mph when he ran from police, crashed into a Mazda on Middle Country Road and then into an oil truck. The crash killed all four people inside the Mazda, and his passenger in the Camaro.

Suffolk District Attorney Tim Sini says Turner also has 10 prior criminal convictions.

Turner accepted a plea deal back in April and voluntarily pleaded guilty.

Sini has called the crash one of the worst crashes in Suffolk County history.

"Those lives were lost for one simple reason," Sini said. "Because of the dangerous, reckless, depraved action of Jamel Turner."

The sentencing was delayed Tuesday morning when Turner refused to leave his jail cell and come to court.

Turner did apologize in court, but the judge said he didn't believe that the Bellport man was sincere.
