The man accused of killing three people during a police chase in Suffolk was arraigned Thursday from his hospital bed at Peconic Bay Medical Center.
Prosecutors say Nahriek Belford, 17, was driving 106 mph when he crashed his SUV back in February. Three people were killed in the crash.
Belford was indicted on 19 charges, including three counts of manslaughter.
District Attorney Tim Sini says the incident started when Belford blew a stop sign and police tried to pull him over.
"The defendant had no intent of stopping for law enforcement," says Sini. "The defendant was driving a stolen SUV. He's also a confirmed member of the Bloods street gang."
Sini says Belford continued to cross over double yellow lines and made an illegal U-turn before crashing into a Honda CRV. Belford's brother was killed, as were Jerome and Randee Weingarten, who were in the CRV. The couple was just about to turn into their apartment complex after enjoying a night out with friends.
