Thomas Krumpter, the acting commissioner of the Nassau County Police Department who has been on the force for more than two decades, announced Monday that he will step down next month.

Krumpter has served as the acting commissioner since 2014. His last day in office will be July 20, and Deputy Commissioner Patrick Ryder will be promoted to acting commissioner following Krumpter's departure.

While Krumpter says County Executive Ed Mangano has "made it clear" that he can stay on as acting commissioner for as long as he'd like, Krumpter tells News 12 that he feels it's the "right time" to step down. He acknowledges that a health scare that landed him in the hospital last month is playing a role in his decision.

"I did look at things different -- I'm 50 years old and I'm going for five stents, that's a little bit of a wake-up call," Krumpter says.

Krumpter has earned $249,000 a year as an "acting" commissioner instead of becoming confirmed as commissioner. That jump in title would cost him nearly $75,000 per year.

Asked why he didn't become the confirmed commissioner, Krumpter said, "Those are questions for the county executive and the Legislature."

Ryder, Krumpter's replacement, says it will be a smooth transition since he has been working closely with Krumpter for years.

"We've been pretty much tied at the hip, we've worked side by side," Ryder says.

Ryder also earns $249,000 a year. It would be up to the county executive to request that the county budget be increased to pay him his current salary, or he'd also face a $75,000 pay cut to become confirmed as commissioner.

There is no comment from Mangano on what he plans to do.
