Gas prices are lower than usual because domestic refiners are running at summer-like levels despite the cold, according to AAA.
The agency says gasoline production typically wanes in the winter, but refiners are not slowing down.
The Energy Information Administration says 17.3 million barrels of gas were refined per day last week, a typical rate for August.
The average price of gas on Long Island is currently $2.78. That is just two cents off from New Jersey, the cheapest location in the Northeast.
