Nearly 1,000 participants came out to Belmont Park Sunday to honor and raise money for families of fallen firefighters.
Hundreds climbed the equivalent of 110 stories during the National 9/11 Climb, symbolizing the steps firefighters took the morning of the Sept. 11 attacks.
"We're going to be doing it in memory of our fallen firefighters and EMTs," said Frank Leto, an organizer of the event.
The event also pays tribute to fallen Nassau County FDNY firefighters Ray Pfeifer and William Tolley.
Participants wore badges with the picture and name of a first responder who died in the line of duty.
The race culminated in each participant ringing a bell and reading the names of the fallen aloud.
Proceeds from the race will go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
