A Jericho man who raced into the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, 2001 was posthumously awarded a 9/11 Heroes Medal of Valor Monday with the help of his family and local politicians.
On Labor Day Jericho volunteer firefighter and attorney Glenn Winuk was honored with a park that now bears his name.
Winuk was working in his Wall Street office on Sept. 11. When the planes hit he ran into the towers to help the FDNY and was killed when the South Tower fell. More than 400 emergency workers killed on Sept. 11 received the medal, but Winuk was not eligible since he was not ordered into the buildings.
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) put pressure on the federal government and President Barack Obama to get Winuk the recognition.
