Another case of West Nile virus recently emerged in Nassau, this time afflicting a 9-year-old West Hempstead boy.
The child became sick from the mosquito-borne disease on Aug. 30 and was hospitalized on Sept. 2. He is now recovering at his home.
New York's health department says there have only been nine West Nile cases in the state involving children 9 years old or younger since 1999. Still, the virus has killed three people in Nassau this year and has sickened up to 10 others.
Suffolk County, meanwhile, reports four cases of suspected West Nile virus, including the infection of another 9-year-old boy.
