Eighth graders at Notre Dame School are working on a special project to meet a veteran, write a biography on them and draw their portrait.
The students interviewed Long Island veterans, took notes and learned about their time serving the country.
"The veteran I was interviewing she was very young when she chose to be in the Navy," said eighth grader Shwetha Nair.
After the interview, the students were tasked with drawing a portrait of the veteran they met.
"I think it came out pretty good, other than the nose was the hard part," said Nair.
The eighth graders will put the finishing touches on their portraits, which will then be displayed at the Long Island Children's Museum in November in honor of Veterans Day.
"They really ask some great questions and it's enjoyable for me and I hope they learned something today," said Vietnam veteran Arnold Yeschin, of Woodbury.
This is the seventh year the Notre Dame School invited veterans to meet their students for an important lesson in both history and art.
