? Three adults and five disabled students sustained injuries Tuesday morning when a school bus overturned and hit a telephone pole on Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown.
According to police, the bus was sideswiped and overturned around 7:30 a.m. Police and emergency personnel quickly arrived on the scene and began treating injuries. The accident resulted in the closure of Hempstead Turnpike in both directions for about an hour.
Five special education students, the bus driver, the bus matron and the driver of the other car involved in the accident were taken to Nassau University Medical Center. They were treated for mostly minor injuries.
Police believe the bus may have run a red light, but say sun glare may have made the traffic signal difficult to see.
Investigators don?t believe the bus had any safety problems.
