A 74-year-old woman was critically injured by a hit-and-run driver in Bay Shore.
Police say Mary Barbato, of Bay Shore, was hit by a vehicle as she was walking on Moffitt Boulevard near Brentwood Road around 6:15 a.m. Monday.
Barbato remains in critical condition at Southside Hospital.
Barbato's brother John Barbato says his sister is in the hospital with nearly every bone in her body broken, including her spine.
"My sister is in terrible shape, but she's going to make it. But she's going to be disabled, she's not going to be able to walk. This whole thing is sick," said John Barbato.
The management at Suffolk Transportation Services tells News 12 the victim was a longtime employee on her way to work when this occurred. They say Barbato is a driver's assistant, who helps out on buses with special-needs children. She has been an employee there for more than 20 years.
"We're kind of a family here, these kinds of things hit home, and we're praying for her to do well," said Tom McAteer, of Suffolk Transportation Service.
Detectives believe the vehicle involved may be a red SUV with possible front-end damage. They say after hitting Barbato, the driver took off heading west on Moffitt Boulevard, then south on Brentwood Road.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
