Some lucky Long Island residents are getting a new home for the holidays.
Seven winners were chosen to purchase a three-bedroom, 1 ½ bath home in the Town of Hempstead's affordable homes lottery. The homes are being built on formerly blighted properties in Roosevelt and Freeport. The price is under market value at $172,000.
Over the last three decades, the Town of Hempstead has had lotteries for 240 single-family homes. Officials say not one of those homeowners has defaulted on their loans.
In all, 21 families applied and were approved for Thursday's affordable home lottery.
"This is a dream come true," said lottery winner Latasha Royal.
