5 departments hosting blood drives in honor of fallen firefighter Billy Moon

Long Islanders can donate blood this weekend in honor of a local firefighter who saved lives even after his death.
Five volunteer fire departments will host blood drives on Saturday, Aug. 8, for the second annual Billy Moon Donor Day.
The FDNY firefighter from Islip died from a head injury during a training exercise in 2022.
Moon donated his organs, saving the lives of five people, including two fellow New York City firefighters.
"In New York State, we have over 8,000 people on the organ donation list, so same if you’re donating blood or bone marrow, the more people involved in these registries, the more people we’re likely to help," said Kristina Moon, Billy’s widow.
The drives, which are organized by The Billy Moon Foundation, are being held in Islip, Elmont, Hauppauge, Massapequa and Manorville.
"The heart of our mission is providing support, advocacy, and awareness for organ donation across the country, while offering financial assistance to donor and recipient families," the foundation says on their website.
