A 40-year-old man has died while in custody at Rikers Island. This is the second inmate death within 24 hours.

The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision released a statement identifying him as Umais Khan.

According to the statement, CPR was performed when Khan could not be woken up. He was pronounced deceased in his dorm just before 11:30 a.m.

Khan’s death is the fourth death of an inmate this year.

The third death was reported less than 24 hours before when 41-year-old Rajpattie Ramkellawan was also found unconscious and unresponsive in her dorm.

“I am absolutely devastated that we have lost someone in our care, and this tragedy is felt by every member of service. On behalf of myself and the Department, I share my deepest condolences with his loved ones. This incident will be investigated.” says NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a statement on the death and confirmed an investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.
