Three men posing as workers for the "water department" duped a Wantagh man and his girlfriend into letting them into his home, which was then robbed.
Police say two Hispanic men showed up at a home on Sarah Drive in Wantagh Monday afternoon and told Vincent Sottile, 83, that they needed to check the water meter and sinks because a neighbor had become sick from iodine.
Sottile and his girlfriend let the two men inside to check the water in the basement. At one point, Sottile says a third man, posing as a worker, entered the home and went into his bedroom.
"I should have followed him, but I didn't," Sottile told News 12 Long Island. "I stayed downstairs with her and the other two guys. So, he did the job."
Sotelli says he soon realized $2,000 in cash and his checkbook was missing from his bedroom.
Police are urging anyone who may be a victim of a similar scam to call Nassau police at 1-800-244-TIPS.
