A 3-foot-long alligator has been shot and killed in the Peconic River.

News 12 had been tracking the gator for more than a week since it was first spotted sunning itself in Calverton.

A Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officer fired a single shot at the gator, killing it about 25 yards downriver from the state DEC boat ramp on Connecticut Avenue.

In April, the DEC found four other alligators living in the area.
