Police say three Baldwin men are charged with grand larceny and conspiracy after they allegedly stole $150,000 worth of Apple iPhones before they were to be shipped to Hong Kong.
Nassau police say Emmanuel Etienne, Jarred Thomas and Duane Carlos worked for a trucking company that shipped goods near John F. Kennedy International Airport. They say the men removed the phones from their proper packaging and then filled the empty boxes with reams of office paper.
Detective Lt. John Azzata says the shipment was sent out without the phones inside. When it arrived in Hong Kong, the recipients immediately notified police. Investigators in the U.S. were then contacted, and that?s when Azzata says the suspects? scam began to unravel.
Azzata says videotape from the warehouses where the phones were being held eventually led to the individuals. The suspects allegedly sold the iPhones to a Brooklyn man for $80,000 cash. They were then sold on the Internet.
Police say they have only recovered 50 of the 300 stolen phones and are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
