An Amityville couple had a close call with a possible bank scam last week.
"They would have wiped it out. They would have really have done that," she said, asking to keep her name anonymous after the incident.
The husband received a phone call from what appeared to be the number listed on the back of his TD Bank card. The person on the other end told him his card was being used at a skimming device and needed to be deactivated. The scammer then told him that someone would come to their home to pick up the deactivated card and arrive within 10 minutes.
As the conversation continued, the man's wife said she noticed several red flags.
"I said, 'if you're from TD Bank, as you say you are, meet me at TD Bank…We'll see if you work for them,'" she said.
The scammer showed up and waited outside for some time before eventually leaving when the couple refused to answer the door.
After the phone call, the couple said they went to their local TD Bank branch, where employees confirmed it was a scam. The bank told them it would never send someone to a customer's home to collect a card.
The couple said they are grateful they recognized the warning signs before they handed over the card and that their money remains safe.
"I feel totally relieved, and I want to help the people because these people are out there that will take your money…. If you see someone calling and they're saying they’re your bank, hang up. Call your bank," she stressed.
The couple says that they caught on to the possible scam in time due to previous News 12 coverage of similar incidents.
News 12 reached out to TD Bank about the reported scam but had not heard back as of Sunday night.
