A new specialized hovercraft is set to boost water rescues across Ocean County, giving first responders the ability to navigate shallow bays, mud and frozen waterways during critical emergencies.

Unlike traditional marine vessels, the specialized craft glides on a cushion of air, allowing first responders to navigate challenging terrain that standard boats cannot reach.

Deputies spent the day practicing vessel maneuvering, handling and tactical capabilities to prepare for emergency responses across the county’s extensive waterways.

According to Sheriff Michael G. Mastronardy, the addition of the hovercraft significantly boosts the department’s search-and-rescue operational scope, ensuring officers can reach stranded mariners or distressed individuals in hard-to-access coastal areas regardless of tide or weather conditions.
