'The wrong time.' Town of North Hempstead approves plan for Inspiration Wharf redevelopment
The Town of North Hempstead's approval of a redevelopment plan for Inspiration Wharf is raising concerns from Port Washington neighbors.

A redevelopment project along the Port Washington waterfront has received approval from the Town of North Hempstead, despite strong opposition from many residents.
The project would transform Inspiration Wharf into 38 condominium units, along with restaurants and retail space.
"This is the wrong development in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Port Washington resident Doug Wood. "That's a tremendous drain on our water resources, school resources. The traffic is already bad and it is going to get worse."
Some residents also worry the project will alter the character of the waterfront and block scenic views of Manhasset Bay.
"Now when you are at the town dock, you will see what is a long industrial building that will be obstructing your view," said Port Washington resident Patricia Wood.
Not all residents oppose the redevelopment.
"I think Port Washington could use some updated development. This part of the waterfront is run down and I am supportive of it," said Marc Miller of Port Washington.
Construction is not expected to begin anytime soon. The town estimates that building plans will not be reviewed until 2028.
Before development can move forward, the site must undergo environmental cleanup because it was previously home to a boat yard, a laundry and a coal facility.
